Transplant Nephrology Fellow – July 2009 to June 2010 

During one year AST/ASN Transplant Nephrology Fellowship, spend six months in the acute inpatient service, two months in the HLA lab, one month in the transplant infectious service and five days a week in the outpatient clinic for the whole year. Acquired extensive experience in the following areas:

  • Indications of pre transplant dialysis
  • Desensitization
  • Induction therapy and maintenance immunosuppressive protocols
  • In hospital Immediate post-transplant management and continued outpatient post-transplant care
  • Transplant in HIV and hepatitis C patient and the drug interactions  between HAART and immunosuppressives. 
  • Learned to overcome the barriers for a successful transplant in these complex patients
  • Management of post-transplant complications including rejections, infections (CMV, BK ) and post-transplant malignancies (PTLD)
  • Pharmacology  of immunosuppressive medications
  • Transplantation immunobiology including tissue typing, CDC and flow cross match and single bead antigen assay (luminex study)
  • Evaluation of new transplant recipients and screening tests
  • Evaluation of living donors and management of complex live donors including enrollment process in the Paired Kidney Exchange Program and long term post donation care.
  • Coordination with multidisciplinary transplant team members including the transplant surgery team
